European Union nationals don’t require work permits to work in Sweden. For public registration there is a separate set of requirements that we will gladly assist you with upon request.
For a Non Europeans citizen with an employment in Sweden for a period longer then 3 months a work and residence permit is required. The three groups that are exceptions from the general rules for any of these different groups mentioned here below a special set of rules and for further inquiries please contact one of our experts for more information:
- Exempted from the work permit requirement are for example Specialists within an international company who work in Sweden for a total of less then one year (please note that a stay in Sweden under these circumstances can still be max 90 days in a 6 month period), People who participate in training or completion of deliveries within the framework of a business transaction for up to three months over a period of 12 months and a few other rare cases.
- For the following groups there are special regulations: performers, au pairs, berry pickers, visiting researchers and athletes or trainers.
- For other groups the requirements for an application will be more extensive such as employees at companies with legal entities in Sweden then on year, any employee with in the following professions:
- Cleaning
- Hotel and restaurants
- Construction
- Trade
- Agriculture and forestry
- Automobile repair
- Service
- Staffing
For all other non European citizens the basic requirement of Work and Residence permit applies. The general rule is that all applications have to be submitted and approved before the applicant arrives in Sweden. Swedish workplace legislation ensures that all employees are provided with basic rights and protection through a certain set up of insurances in their place of work. For the accurate processing times for applications we kindly ask you to inquire directly with one of our offices for the latest updates. With all applications any dependent parties (spouses, registered partners and children under 21 years old) are to be submitted together with the main applicant.
Following documents are always required (scanned copies sufficient) ; passports, wedding certificate in original and translated to English, birth certificate for children in original and translated to English and power of attorney allowing representatives from Nordic Relocation Group to act on behalf of the applicant and co- applicants through out the process.
When considering using non European citizens within a Swedish work place there are three ways for the candidate to employed with a work permit:
- Directly from a Swedish company that has been established for a period longer then one year.
- As an employee within the same company employed at a branch in another country.
- As an employee at a foreign company that is providing a service at a Swedish company where the Swedish company must provide certain guarantees regarding financial compensation and adequate insurance is provided for the individual.
All first time Work and Residence permits are limited to 24 months or for the validity of the passport if shorter then 24 months from the date of approval or for the period of the offer of employment stated by the employer if shorter then 24 months. Requirements for the general work permit are the following:
- The position has been advertised in Sweden and with in EU/EES and Switzerland for a minimum of ten days. The company webpage or LinkedIn will not be sufficient it has to be through the public employment agency.
- The terms of the employment and salary must be at least in par with those set by the Swedish collective agreements or which is customary within the occupation or industry.
- The employer must provide following insurances from the day the employee beings to work; health, life, occupational injury and occupational pension.
- The salary has to enable the employee to support oneself and the work needs to be to an extent that the compensation will be no less then SEK 13 000 per month before taxes
- The employer is obliged to complete an offer of employment and allowing a relevant trade union to provide a statement of opinion regarding the terms of employment.
The same time limitations as previously apply; the permit is valid for a maximum of 24 months or for the validity of the passport if shorter then 24 months from the date of approval or for the period of the offer of employment stated by the employer if shorter then 24 months. Requirements for the general work permit are the following:
- The terms of the employment and salary must be at least in par with those set by the Swedish collective agreements or with are customary within the occupation or industry.

During the first 24 months with a Work and Residence permit the employee is bound to the employer and job description. 30 days prior to the expiry date of the first Work and Residence Permit is the earliest an application for prolongation of the permit can be posted. The renewal will have the same time limitations as the original permit. Requirements for the renewal are besides new samples of the previously mentioned documentation:
- Documents showing the salary of the employee for each month they have worked in Sweden and a summary from all previous years from the tax agency.
- Proof of insurances previously mentioned including period and number of the policy.
When the employee has held a Work and Residence Permit for a period longer then 24 months the permit is no longer bound to the employer only the job description. When applying for a second renewal after 24 months the validity of the new permit will be an other 24 months with the same demands as per above with the addition that if the employee has had different employers during the period of the permit they will all have to submit a statement as to insure this fact. Copies from each work place insurance policies with details will also have to be submitted.
The permanent residence application will be applicable when a time limited period has been issued for 48 months. Additional documentation to be submitted is hiring certificates from all employers during the stay in Sweden and all pay slips for the time worked in Sweden.
