Luxembourg offers a range of temporary and permanent work visa (authorization of stay) for the purpose of foreign nationals attending to business matters or employment. European Union nationals

European Union nationals don't require work visa to work in Luxembourg.

Non EU nationals

Non-EU nationals must have a work Visa also called authorization of stay in order to be legally entitled to work in the country.

In Luxembourg, it’s recommended that application for your work visa be submitted ‘several months’ before you start work. The Ministry of Labour requires proof that an employer has tried to find an EU national for the position and may submit candidates of its own from the local unemployment rolls. 

The third-country national who wishes to reside on Luxembourg territory for more than three months to work, must be holder of a work visa (authorisation to stay for a salaried worker). The application must be made and favourably advised before entering on Luxembourg territory.

The third-country national who wishes to reside on Luxembourg territory for more than three months to work as a highly qualified worker, must be holder of an    «European blue card ». The application must be made and favourably advised before entering on Luxembourg territory.

The third-country national who wishes to reside on Luxembourg territory for more than three months in view to conduct a research project, must be holder of an authorisation to stay as a « researcher ». The application must be made and favourably advised before entering on Luxembourg territory

To be considered a transferred worker, the worker must have an open-ended contract with the firm that is carrying out the transfer

The third-country national who wishes to reside on Luxembourg territory for more than three months to work as part of a transfer, must be holder of an authorisation to stay as a transferred worker. The application must be made and favourably advised before entering on Luxembourg territory.

Following conditions must be fulfilled:

  • The temporary secondment must be made as part of the contract concluded between the sending firm and the recipient of the service provision carrying out its activity in Luxembourg ;
  • The secondment takes place as part of an authorization of secondment;
  • The third-country national must be linked to the sending firm by means of an open-ended work contract. This work contract must be at least six months old before the starting date of the secondment to Luxembourg for which the authorization is applied for.
  • The sending firm must be in possession of a collective secondment confirmation for the pre-set duration so as for the service provision to be accomplished.
  • The third-country national who wishes to reside on Luxembourg territory for more than three months to work as a posted worker, must be holder of an authorization to stay as a « posted worker ». The application must be made and favourably advised before entering on Luxembourg territory.
