The Indian government has announced another extension to the previous June 30, 2017 deadline for converting Person of Indian Origin (PIO) cards to Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) cards. The new deadline is December 31, 2017.
The PIO card scheme was withdrawn in January of 2015, with the aim of converting PIO card holders to OCI cards. The OCI card has a lifetime validity, and is complemented by a lifetime multiple entry visa into India, with exemption from registration with the local Foreigners Regional registration Office (FRRO) and with the local police, regardless of the duration of the visit.
